FDA Will Soon Announce Next Steps in Essure Review

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said last week that it plans to announce the next steps in a review of the highly controversial birth control device Essure®.
The device, which was marketed and sold as a less invasive alternative to tubal ligation surgery, is supposed to be a safe, permanent sterilization method, but so far, many women are finding that the device does not live up to its intended purpose. The device is currently under a “high priority” review by the administration after countless women have reported serious and debilitating side effects, ranging from pain, inflammation, fatigue, and menstrual irregularities to unintended pregnancy and miscarriages. Many side effects may be related to an allergic reaction to the metals used in the device.
Two members of congress have already called for the device to be removed from the market, saying that further studies should be conducted on its efficacy and safety before it can be made available again. The FDA’s Obstetrics and Gynecology Devices Panel of the Medical Devices Advisory Committee contend that Essure should remain an option for women who are good candidate for traditional surgery, but did recommend continuing the safety review.
