Phoenix's Loose Grip on Gun Laws Seems To Be Working
Posted By Salvador Phillips, PLLC || Jan 12, 2016
Recently, Phoenix police departments stated that in 2015, only 113 murders occurred in the city. Reports show that this number is the lowest it has been over the last three decades. Many sources are stating this is because Phoenix has the least amount of gun laws and the highest rate of firearm ownership despite the fact that Phoenix is the largest city in the United States.
Chicago, on the other hand, has some of the strictest and tightest regulated gun laws in the country. However, this smaller city had over four times the amount of murders than Phoenix in 2015.
Still, firearm laws are taken extremely seriously, especially when guns are used during other crimes, such as:
- Armed robbery
- Felon in possession of firearm
- Grand theft of a firearm
Many law enforcement officers and prosecutors believe that enforcing harsh restrictions protects the people of society. For this reason, many of these officers and prosecutors become overzealous when charging accused persons with offenses. When a person is accused of committing a crime while in possession of a gun, they may face heavy fines and serious enhanced penalties that can result in long jail or prison sentences.
