Drug Classifications in Arizona
Posted By Salvador Law Group || Oct 3, 2019
According to Arizona law, you cannot knowingly possess or use illegal drugs. If you are caught possessing or using an illegal drug in the state, your potential penalty may vary depending on the classification of the drug you possessed or used. Get the facts on drug classifications in Arizona so you know how to defend your rights.
Arizona Drug Schedules
Drug classifications, also known as drug schedules, are divided into five categories depending upon the drug’s acceptable medical use and abuse potential. Schedule I drugs encompass substances that have the highest potential for abuse and physical or psychological dependency. As the schedule number increases, the potential for abuse or dependency decreases—Schedule II, III, IV, and V each have successively lower potential for abuse and dependency.
Drug schedules are categorized in the following ways:
Schedule I: Substances with no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse. Examples of Schedule I drugs include heroin, LSD, marijuana, ecstasy, and peyote.
Schedule II: Substances with a high potential for abuse. Examples of Schedule II drugs include Vicodin, cocaine, methamphetamine, OxyContin, fentanyl, Adderall, and Ritalin.
Schedule III: Substances with a moderate to low potential for dependence. Examples of Schedule III drugs include ketamine, anabolic steroids, and testosterone.
Schedule IV: Substances with a low potential for abuse and low risk of dependence. Examples of Schedule IV drugs include Xanax, Valium, and Ambien.
Schedule V: Substances with a lower potential for abuse than Schedule IV and consist of preparations containing limited quantities of certain narcotics. Examples of Schedule V drugs include Robitussin AC, Lyrica, and Parepectolin.
Due to the increased risks associated with Schedule I drugs, your penalty for the possession or use of this classification of drug may be more severe than a substance with a lower schedule.
